Joe Rogan’s move from California to Texas in 2020 is one of the most consequential relocations in modern media, and the property record behind it is unusually clean. He bought a lakefront estate outside Austin for $14.4 million in an off-market deal, in the same year he signed a podcast licensing agreement with Spotify reported at more than $100 million. He then sold the Los Angeles-area house he had owned since 2003 for $3.45 million.
The Austin house is not just where he lives. It contains the studio the podcast is recorded in, which makes it a working production facility as much as a residence, and it is the reason the show’s centre of gravity moved from California to Texas.
This guide covers his homes in both states, the commercial building he is connected to in downtown Austin, and which of the widely repeated details about the estate actually hold up.

Who is Joe Rogan?
Joe Rogan is an American podcaster, comedian, and commentator. He began as a stand-up, hosted Fear Factor, and has worked for many years as a colour commentator for the UFC. The Joe Rogan Experience, which he launched in 2009, became one of the most listened-to podcasts in the world, and in 2020 he signed a licensing deal with Spotify reported at over $100 million. That deal was renewed in February 2024 on different terms: a multi-year agreement reported at up to $250 million, and no longer exclusive, so the show now also appears on YouTube, Apple, and Amazon.
He announced his move from California to Texas in 2020, citing among other things the freedom to run his business the way he wanted. Whatever the reasoning, the property consequences are documented, and they are the subject of this article.
The Bell Canyon houses he left behind
Rogan’s California life was in Bell Canyon, a gated community of around 800 homes in the hills of eastern Ventura County, just over the county line from Los Angeles and north of Calabasas. He bought a French Country-style house there on about two acres in 2003 for $2.3 million. He owned it for seventeen years, which is a long tenure by celebrity standards and covers the entire period in which he went from a television host to one of the most influential broadcasters in the country.
He put it on the market in October 2020, after the Texas purchase, asking $3.2 million for a house of around 7,600 square feet with five bedrooms. It sold above that, for $3.45 million, with the sale reported in March 2021. Against $2.3 million paid seventeen years earlier, that is a modest return in a Los Angeles market that rose sharply over the same period, even with the $250,000 he secured above his asking price. One widely shared headline puts this house at $4.5 million; that figure is the $3.2 million asking price converted into Australian dollars.
It was not his only house in the community. In 2017 he paid about $5 million for a second, far more contemporary Bell Canyon house, a record price for the neighbourhood at the time. What became of it after he moved to Texas has not been reported, and it does not appear in any coverage of his sales, so its status is unknown.
The Lake Austin estate
The Texas purchase was reported at $14.4 million, made off-market in 2020. The property sits on Lake Austin, on roughly four acres with around 300 feet of private water frontage, and the house is a modern farmhouse of around 10,900 square feet with eight bedrooms and ten bathrooms. It lies west of downtown, on the stretch of the Colorado River dammed to form Lake Austin; a more precise location is not given here, as with every private home on this site.
The amenities most consistently reported include a purpose-built podcast studio, a substantial gym fitted out by Sorinex, an infinity pool, a wine cellar, a home cinema, a sauna and cold plunge, and private boat dockage. The studio is the significant one. Austin Monthly described it in 2022 as custom-built inside the house, finished in reclaimed barn board and neon. It means the estate is where the podcast is produced, and it explains why the house is talked about far more than a comparable property owned by someone else at the same price.
There has been no house tour. The purchase was off-market, so no listing photographs were ever published, and the only room the public sees regularly is the studio, on camera in every episode. Images shared online as a tour of the house are unverified.
One detail circulating widely does not hold up. Several sites place the estate in Spanish Oaks, a gated community south-west of the city near Bee Cave. Spanish Oaks is not on Lake Austin, and a property cannot have several hundred feet of Lake Austin frontage and be in that development. The lakefront description is the one supported by the contemporaneous reporting of the purchase, including in the Houston Chronicle; the Spanish Oaks attribution appears to be an error propagated between aggregator sites. The same pages tend to carry a 7.2-acre lot and a named celebrity architect, neither of which appears in any reporting of the sale.
Lake Austin has been a magnet for high-value purchases for years, and the same stretch of water features in the property history of Matthew McConaughey.
What the estate is worth now
A figure of more than $17 million circulates as the property’s current value, and some headlines go as far as calling it a $20 million mansion. The first is an automated estimate of the kind Zillow produces, not an appraisal, a listing, or a sale; there is no Zillow listing for the house because it has never been on the market. The second has no source at all.
The documented number is the $14.4 million he paid in 2020. Austin’s high-end market rose steeply in the years immediately afterwards and has been more mixed since, so a higher figure today is plausible, but nothing has tested it. The house has not been listed, and no sale has been reported.
The Austin building behind the comedy club
Rogan’s other significant Austin property connection is commercial rather than residential. In November 2021, an entity tied to his manager bought the historic Ritz building on East Sixth Street, a roughly 5,900-square-foot property in the middle of the city’s busiest bar district.
It reopened in March 2023 as the Comedy Mothership, Rogan’s comedy club, after about two and a half years of development. It is worth listing here because it is often folded into descriptions of his real estate, but it should be understood as a business premises bought through a corporate entity, not a home, and the ownership structure means it is not straightforwardly a personal asset.
Where does Joe Rogan live now?
Austin, Texas, at the Lake Austin estate he bought in 2020.
This is about as well supported as a current-residence answer gets. He announced the move publicly, and it was extensively covered. He sold the California house he had lived in since 2003 the following year. The podcast has been recorded in Austin since the move, first from a temporary studio and then from the facility associated with the estate, and it is still made there, then published on Spotify, YouTube, and the other major platforms since the 2024 renewal ended its exclusivity. He opened a comedy club in the city in 2023, which is not something people do in a place they are passing through. And there is no reporting of a sale, a listing, or a further move.
Texas has no state income tax, which for someone with a nine-figure licensing agreement is a material consideration whether or not it was the deciding one. Other high earners have made the same calculation in the same period, including Mark Wahlberg’s move to Nevada. What separates Rogan’s case is that the house is also the workplace, which makes it considerably less likely to change hands than a home bought purely to live in.
