Larry the Cable Guy House: The $3.4M Windermere Lake Home, the Nebraska Farm and the Sanford Compound

Updated By Daniel Harper

Larry the Cable Guy, whose real name is Dan Whitney, has split his life between two places: rural Nebraska, where he was born, and Central Florida, where the character was created. Searches for the Larry the Cable Guy house turn up a mix of real records and invented details, but the documented record covers three properties. He had a 180-acre farm in the Lincoln area of Nebraska. He owned a 20-acre compound in Sanford, Florida, which he sold in 2011 for $925,000. In 2020 he and his wife, Cara, paid $3.4 million for a lakefront house in Windermere, near Orlando.

The Nebraska Farm

Whitney grew up on an 80-acre farm outside Pawnee City, Nebraska, according to a 2005 Lincoln Journal Star profile cited by Wikipedia. When he was 16, his family moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, where his father worked as a school principal.

He moved back to Nebraska as an adult. In a 2018 interview with the Downingtown Times, he spoke from his home in Walton, a small town of about 300 people on the edge of Lincoln. “I have a 180-acre farm here,” he said, and described bean fields to the east and corn on the other three sides. He also explained why he came back: “I missed looking at the bean fields.”

No sale price, purchase date or house size for the farm appears in any credible source. Wikipedia lists the family as living in Lincoln on the same 180 acres, and his Nebraska ties go well beyond the farm. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, kept a suite at the Huskers’ Memorial Stadium, and has a street named after him in Pawnee City.

The Sanford Compound (2001-2011)

Whitney bought a property in Sanford, Seminole County, in 2001 while he was still single. The Orlando Sentinel reported that he rebuilt it as a bachelor pad. It became a custom compound of three buildings on 20 acres. Fox News featured its man cave in a 2011 roundup. The room had a billiards table, a card table, a bar, bar signs, a flat-screen TV, an arcade-style video machine and turf-like carpet.

He married Cara in 2005, and their son, Wyatt, and daughter, Reagan, followed. With a growing family, he put the house up for sale. It went on the market in November 2010 with an asking price of $1.55 million. It sold in 2011 for $925,000, about 40% below the asking price, according to GrowthSpotter.

Larry the Cable Guy House in Windermere, Florida

In May 2020, GrowthSpotter reported that Dan and Cara Whitney had paid $3.4 million for a five-bedroom house on Lake Butler in Windermere, west of Orlando. The trade publication said the couple were relocating from Nebraska. The seller was William “Bill” Kitchen, founder of the ride maker US ThrillRides. He had bought the property in 2006 for $3.6 million, so it sold for less than he paid 14 years earlier. The house had been on and off the market with several brokerages before the sale.

The two-story house is in a Southern neo-classical style and covers 8,204 square feet. It has 550 feet of shoreline on the Butler Chain of Lakes, and the listing agent called it “the jewel above the lake.” The listing included:

  • A heated pool and outdoor spa
  • A private covered boat dock with a boat lift
  • A home gym and a media room
  • A wood-paneled study and a kitchen with double ovens
  • A guest suite and a three-car garage
  • A primary bedroom with a gas fireplace, two walk-in closets and a covered balcony

The house sold fully furnished. No later sale has been reported, so as of the latest reports the Windermere house is the family’s most recent documented purchase.

Unverified: the Scottsdale mansion and the “golf course” farm

Some celebrity-wealth sites say Whitney paid $3.6 million for a Scottsdale, Arizona, home in 2016. Others say the Nebraska farm has a private golf course, a movie theater and a recording studio. None of them cite a deed, a listing or a news report, and no major outlet has covered either claim. The only documented $3.6 million figure is what the previous owner paid for the Windermere house in 2006.
