Susan Boyle House: The Blackburn Council Home She Kept for 60 Years and Her 2026 Move

By Daniel Harper

In this article

For more than six decades, Susan Boyle lived in the same small house in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland. It was the family’s council house, where she grew up, and she bought it with her earnings in 2010, the year after her Britain’s Got Talent audition made her famous. HELLO! reports she paid £65,000 for it.

Her fame and record sales didn’t change her address. A £300,000 new-build on the other side of town didn’t stick, and she later bought the house next door to make the old place bigger. In April 2026, reports said she had finally left Blackburn for Larbert, near Falkirk. She hasn’t confirmed the move in detail.

The Blackburn Council House She Grew Up In

Susan was born in Dechmont in 1961 and raised in Blackburn, the youngest of nine children of Patrick Boyle, a miner and Second World War veteran, and Bridget, a shorthand typist. She has said nine people once lived in the house, and she shared an upstairs bedroom with her sisters Bridie and Cathy. HELLO! describes it as a three-bedroom former council house, while Wikipedia lists four bedrooms. That modest home is the Susan Boyle house most fans picture, and it stayed her base long after her debut album, I Dreamed a Dream, became the fastest-selling debut album in UK chart history at the time.

Her reasons were mostly personal. In November 2009, months after she sang “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Misérables at her televised audition, she told the press she had no plans to move. She said she didn’t want to be “moving an inch away” from her family. She also joked that her cat, Pebbles, who had lived there all her life, would hate to live anywhere posh. Blackburn was also home to the Catholic parish where she sang in the church choir and volunteered.

The £300,000 New-Build That Didn’t Last

In 2010, Susan bought a five-bedroom detached new-build in West Lothian, which IBTimes reported that year as a £300,000 home. Her brother Gerry said she had told him she couldn’t afford to furnish it. HELLO! later reported that the house was on the other side of Blackburn and that she struggled to settle there.

She moved back into the family home, so the bigger house never replaced the one she grew up in.

Buying the House Next Door

About four years after the new-build, Susan bought the neighbouring house for £110,000, according to HELLO!, and combined the two properties into one larger home. That puts the purchase at around 2014.

Inside the Susan Boyle House

In 2019, Susan told the Edinburgh Evening News about the renovations. She had a new kitchen fitted, the living room papered and the floors redone, and she added a summerhouse in the back garden. She said the work made the place feel “bigger and more homely.”

The decor is silver, grey and cream, with glittery flecks on the walls. The living room has silver-and-cream striped wallpaper from Next, framed photos of her late parents and religious icons, and it formed the backdrop to her 2020 birthday video for Captain Tom Moore. Her piano is the centrepiece of the front room. She told the paper she was learning to play but was still “a long way off” playing and singing at the same time. In a 2021 home tour filmed for OK! magazine, she also pointed out a “Dream” sign in the window.

Where Does Susan Boyle Live Now?

On April 2, 2026, the day after her 65th birthday, Susan posted an Instagram photo at home, and fans spotted what looked like a “New Home” card on the mantel. The Scottish Sun then reported that she had moved about 20 miles to Larbert, near Falkirk, where her personal assistant, Geraldine Easton, lives. Easton had been making a daily 30-minute trip to help her, and a friend called leaving Blackburn an emotional wrench for a proud local.

As of the latest reports, nothing has been published about the Larbert property’s price, size or purchase date. It’s also unclear whether she has sold the Blackburn houses. Her two cats and the photos of her parents reportedly moved with her.
