Since then he has worked steadily as a touring performer rather than a chart act, with long runs in Las Vegas and a schedule built around live dates, most of them in the South and around Nashville. Hicks was at home. He described seeing large debris carried a hundred feet into the air, feeling the house shake, and taking shelter in a crawl space in his garage until it passed. In the days afterwards he filmed a walk through the damaged streets around him.
Local outlets covering the storm identified him straightforwardly as a Germantown resident, which is the clearest confirmation available that Nashville is where he actually lives rather than merely works. Nashville has drawn a great many performers to live full time as well as record, from Reese Witherspoon to a long list of working musicians.
The Guntersville Lake property in Alabama
After winning American Idol, Hicks bought waterfront property on Goose Pond Island, in a gated lakeside community called The Oaks on Lake Guntersville in northern Alabama. The lake is a 69,000-acre reservoir created by the Tennessee Valley Authority along a 75-mile stretch of the Tennessee River, and it is the largest body of water in the state.
The community offers the things that make a lake property usable rather than ornamental: two marinas, a boat launch, a clubhouse, gated access and open water views. Hicks has been direct about why he bought there, and it is not about the house. He came to know the lake during years of touring the Southeast, and he has spoken about the bass fishing on Guntersville, which is genuinely famous among anglers, in terms considerably warmer than he uses for most things.
He has also been honest about how little he gets to use it. By his own account his schedule limits him to a visit once or twice a year. That is a reasonable description of a great many second homes, and it is more candid than the usual celebrity account of a retreat.
Claims that do not hold up
Two assertions circulate widely and should be treated with care. One is that Hicks lives in Calabasas, California. The other is that his home is an estate of roughly 5,200 square feet on nearly three acres outside Birmingham, Alabama.
Neither appears in property records, a listing, or any mainstream reporting. Both come from aggregator sites that produce house articles at volume, and they contradict each other as well as contradicting the local Nashville coverage that places him in Germantown. Birmingham is a plausible-sounding guess because it is his home city, and Calabasas is a plausible-sounding guess because it is where television people live, but plausibility is not evidence. Neither claim is supported here.

Nothing in reliable reporting since suggests he has moved.
He retains substantial ties to Alabama, through the lake property, through the Birmingham restaurant he co-owns, and through family and hometown connections. Those ties are real, and they are why he is often described as an Alabama resident. But spending part of the year somewhere and running a business there is not the same as living there, and the evidence for Nashville as his home is considerably stronger. Other Nashville-based performers, including Jelly Roll, have followed the same pattern of keeping a working base in the city while remaining identified with somewhere else.
What is not known
Neither property has a published purchase price, square footage or listing history, and no interior photographs of either have been released through a real-estate channel. That is unremarkable.
