Fantasia Barrino House: The Two Charlotte Homes She Lost

Updated By Daniel Harper

In this article

Fantasia Barrino bought her first house in 2004, the year she won American Idol at nineteen. She paid $740,000 for a property in the Piper Glen area of Charlotte, North Carolina. Fourteen years later, she sold it for somewhere between $465,000 and $479,000, a loss of around a quarter of a million dollars.

The second house went worse. In 2007 she bought a larger home nearby, roughly 6,500 square feet on a golf course, for $1.3 million. It was set for a foreclosure auction in January 2009, and in 2013 she signed the deed over to the lender to avoid foreclosure outright.

This guide sets out both properties and what happened to them, and what is known about where she lives now, two decades and one considerable career revival later.

Who is Fantasia Barrino?

Fantasia Barrino is an American singer and actress from High Point, North Carolina. She won the third season of American Idol in 2004, aged nineteen, and released a debut album that went to number one. She later won a Grammy and was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway production of The Color Purple.

In 2023, she starred as Celie in the film adaptation of The Color Purple, a performance that brought her a Golden Globe nomination and the strongest reviews of her career, twenty years after the show that made her.

That gap between 2004 and 2023 is the period the property record covers, and it was not a smooth one.

The first house, bought at nineteen

She bought in Piper Glen, an established golf-course community in south Charlotte, in 2004, for $740,000. The house ran 4,541 square feet with four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, two bonus rooms, and a music room.

It is worth pausing on the circumstances. She was nineteen, had just won a television competition, had a young daughter, and had come from a background with no money. Buying a $740,000 house in her home state in that first year was not extravagant by the standards of what Idol winners have done since; it was, if anything, cautious.

She kept it for fourteen years and sold it in 2018. Reported figures for the sale differ slightly, at around $465,000 in some accounts and $479,000 in others. Either way, it is roughly $260,000 to $275,000 below what she paid.

The explanation is partly market and partly timing. She bought in 2004, ahead of the crash, and Charlotte’s outer suburbs recovered more slowly than its core. Large houses in golf communities were among the slowest categories to come back anywhere in the American south-east.

The second house, and the bank

In March 2007 she bought a considerably larger property in the Glynmoor Lakes development nearby, paying $1.3 million for around 6,500 square feet of two-storey stucco backing onto a golf course.

By January 2009, that home was scheduled for a foreclosure auction, which local outlets in Charlotte reported at the time. She retained it at that point.

The reprieve did not last. In 2013, she transferred the deed to her lender, an arrangement known as a deed instead of foreclosure, which hands the property over voluntarily rather than going through a forced sale. She lost the house, but avoided a foreclosure judgment.

Barrino has spoken publicly over the years about the financial difficulties of that period and about being poorly advised early in her career. This article does not go further into that. What is documented is the sequence: a $1.3 million purchase in 2007, an auction date in 2009, and the deed signed over in 2013.

Deed-in-lieu arrangements are far more common than the coverage of celebrity finances suggests, and they are generally the least damaging way out of an untenable mortgage. A comparable, more recent case is set out in the account of Randall Emmett’s Los Angeles house, which sold under foreclosure pressure rather than being surrendered.

Where does Fantasia Barrino live now?

Charlotte, North Carolina.

She has remained in the Charlotte area throughout, and has shown parts of her home on social media in recent years. Her family and her roots are in North Carolina, in High Point and Charlotte, and nothing in reliable reporting suggests she has relocated to Los Angeles or New York despite the film and stage work that would justify it.

What is not documented is the specific property. No purchase by her has been reported since 2013, and no current home of hers appears in any property record, listing, or mainstream report. Sites offering a valuation for a current Fantasia Barrino mansion are describing either one of the two houses above, both long gone, or an estimate produced from a net-worth figure.

Given the resurgence her career has had since 2023, a purchase may well appear in the record in future. It has not yet.

What the record shows

Two houses, both bought young, both in her home city, both lost at a loss. It is one of the clearer illustrations on this site of how quickly a windfall career can outrun the money behind it, and of how badly the 2007 to 2013 period treated buyers who had entered the market shortly before it.

  • House Size: 5,000 square feet
  • Interior House Design: Contemporary white and gold styling
  • $1.3 million Glynmoor Lake: 6,600 square feet house area
  • Former Golf Course Home: 4,541-square-foot house area

It also stands in contrast with the other American Idol winner covered here, whose property record has been steady and unremarkable, as set out in the account of Taylor Hicks’s homes.
